Until I get time to put my full canoeing resource notes on this site, these lesson plans should provide a starting point for anyone planning Cub canoeing.
Lesson Plan for a Junior Canoe Lesson
Note - this has not been designed to cover the canoeing badge.
- Aims:-
- Introduction of the new skill of canoeing
- Experience the new skill of canoeing through involvement
- To provide the cubs with enough knowledge to safely enjoy canoeing
- Introduction:-
- Cover SAFETY RULES applicable, both generally to water activities, and specifically to Canoeing.
- Always Wear PFD's (what they used to call life jackets in the past)
- No Standing in canoes
- Stay with a capsized canoe (easier to see the canoe than a single swimmer)
- The Parts of a canoe - Bow; stern; port; starboard, gunwale.
- The parts of a paddle - grip; shaft; flare; blade.
- Care of equipment -
- using paddles as poles
- treatment of canoes and paddles
Lesson Body
- How to wear a PDF
- Ensure you ARE wearing your PFD in the canoe at all times.
- Demonstration and practice of paddling, turning etc - including bowstroke and backstroke.
- Getting into and out of canoes.
- Stationary paddling and working of tethered canoes
- Keeping weight evenly distributed
- paddling a course (a triangular course etc. around marker bouys if possible)
- Demonstrate capsizing and righting procedures
Lesson Plan for an Intermediate/Senior Canoe LessonNote - this has not been specifically designed to cover the canoeing badge, so may need modification to do so.
- Aims:-
- To porvide cubs with knowledge and experience of some finer points asn well as the basics of canoeing.
- To get the cubs involved, and keep them enjoying the activity whilst still learning.
- Introduction:-
- Safety Rules
- Always Wear PFD's
- No deliberate capsizing of canoes (unless so instructed)
- Stay with a capsized canoe (easier to see the canoe than a single swimmer)
- use of leader's whistle code
- The Parts of a canoe - Bow; stern; port; starboard, gunwale, Thwart, Hull.
- The parts of a paddle - grip; shaft; flare; blade.
Lesson Body
- How to wear a PDF
- Ensure you ARE wearing your PFD in the canoe at all times.
- Demonstration and practice of paddling, turning etc - including J-stroke.
- Demonstration and Practice of getting in and out of canoes, including the sequence ad balance involved.
- Explaination of responsibilites of a bow and stern paddler.
- Capsizing and Rafting.
- Tip test (and of course emptying a capsized canoe)
- Demonstrate & practice capsizing and righting procedures
- paddling a course, slalem, etc as time allows
